This Quirky Vegan

What THIS vegan eats

Vegan cheese

Vegan food is easy, convenient, and delicious. The one exception is vegan cheese and it is a topic sure to get vegans arguing amongst themselves. Sorry fellow vegans but it is time we admit the truth; a lot of it is gross and yet great vegan cheese DOES exist…if you look for it.

New vegans often ask what is the best vegan cheese but they very rarely like the answer. The best vegan cheeses are not the ones you can easily find in all UK supermarkets. If you want a great taste and texture you are going to have to bite the bullet and order online or shop at a specialist vegan store. It is also not the cheapest brands. You get what you pay for and if you want the best vegan cheese and for it to also be the cheapest you are not being realistic.

Some people do like the cheaper and more convenient brands but they left me thinking I hated all vegan cheese for a long time. They are the ones that tend to be gross or, at best, bland and leaving me wondering why I bothered. I grew up a cheese loving vegetarian and after going vegan I wanted to find vegan versions of the cheese I used to eat but instead ended up finding the best cheeses I have ever had (and they just happen to be vegan).

So what are the best options? Well, taste is subjective so you are probably going to have to try a few brands and types before you find the ones you love. It is trial and error and you are probably going to end up eating some awful ones along the way. You can even try making your own!

I have very strong opinions about what the best brand is though and that is Vegusto! It is expensive but it tastes amazing and it worth the price. I love the melty, aromatic, and piquant. It has a strong flavour so if you are a bland cheese fan it might not be for you but anyone looking for great vegan cheese should at least try it.

I also find VegAmigo pizza cheese to be a good everyday type of cheese (unsurprisingly) ideal for pizza. But it is also good for nachos and grilled sandwiches. Brands like Tofutti are a little bland but make a nice sandwich when grated and mixed with vegan mayo.

Homemade almond cheese is the only kind I can stomach!

I have really enjoyed some almond cheese I have made too. I would like to try making some other types at some point too though.
