Impromptu tea parties

TeaPartyMy kids like a mini tea party as an occasional treat. More of a single serve thing than a proper afternoon tea. This is never properly planned so I never have everything in to set up a nice tiered stand with sandwiches and baked goods but I work with what I have.

The key for me is not worrying about making a perfect tea party but to have a little fun with the things we have in already. Letting go of that pressure means this does not take much effort but it gets a big “WOW” from the kids anyway.

I generally make it up of a selection of sandwiches and wraps, something cake based, and some fruit. Since it is for children the drink is normally a fresh orange juice or soya milkshake.

Here are some suggestions for fillings that my kids like that work in sandwiches or wraps;

  • Vegan ‘cheese’ and pickle
  • Hummus and cucumber
  • Shredded carrot and hummus
  • Tomato hummus and vegan ‘cheese’
  • Pesto and pepper
  • Pesto and salad
  • Jam/jelly
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate and hazelnut spread
  • Vegan ‘ham’ and mustard
  • Vegan ‘lunchmeat’ and salad
  • Salad and vegan ‘mayo’
  • Couscous (wraps only)

Some easy suggestions for baked goods;

  • Store bought brands like Lazy Day Foods
  • Some supermarkets have Free From things like Lazy days (check the label)
  • Some cake mixes are vegan, you just need to replace the egg
  • Jus-Rol have good selection of vegan pastries
  • Soreen mini banana loafs
  • For a healthy option bake a low/no sugar banana bread
  • Bake muffins/cupcakes/cakes/brownies from a recipe- I recommend the Ms Cupcake book
  • Try a ‘crazy cake’
